Two reasons for the 3 star review. First, the hardware provided was of low quality. The 3 of 6 of the long locking washers provided spun inside the frame of the vehicle when I torque the nuts down to the prescribed torque. Will probably be impossible to remove now without a cutting torch. Harder or thicker steel for the hardware would remedy this issue. Secondly, the frame of the hitch had multiple deep gouges in the paint finish that would surely rust. I had to sand and touch up the gouges to make sure it wouldn't rust. Kind of a pain. It did install relatively easily and was reasonably priced so it has that going for it.

I bought one of these for my Forester. My friend, who is handy but not a mechanic, offered to install it for me. He said it was a breeze to install. In particular, he mentioned these little 'thingies' (I don't know what to call them) that are attached to the bolts that alignment of he bolts to the holes very easy. He said it made the installation much easier than he anticipated. So this recommendation comes from the installer: Excellent product, with mechanisms that helped make installation easier. He highly recommends it.

Perfect fit! Was able to install it in 1 hour. I watched installation videos in youtube to familiarize myself. I did not cut the heat shield, thanks to the other reviewer that said this. I just drilled 2 holes on each heat shield (see attached photo) to allow the bolt to go through, and good thing is the exact place to drill is already marked in the heat shield. I also removed my muffler to make the install a lot easier. Muffler is only held by 2 bolts, which can be easily removed by an impact. Overall I am completely satisfied. Plus customer service is excellent!

As many others noted below, my hitch arrived in no packaging and had a few small paint chips in it. No big deal, I sprayed the problem spots with a few coats of rust paint and problem solved. It'll live forever under my Forester getting coated in mud anyways so not too worried about it. Installation wasn't too bad. Did it myself without the use of a jack. As many others wrote, I too drilled holes in the heat shield instead of omitting it or cutting out pieces. However, a word of warning, your hitch will be slightly tilted due to the thickness of the heatshield on one side and not on the other. You probably won't notice if you're planning to tow something but my bike rack is a tiny tiny tiny bit tilted. If this bothers you, I'd suggest to cut the heat shield like the instructions say. I don't think drilling even saves any time or is any easier. It would take 2 seconds to cut out a section of it. Anyways, I'm happy with the hitch and it holds my bike rack the way it's supposed to so two thumbs up from this guy.

Like some previous reviewers' experiences, my item came without any packaging - due to size and weight - had its paint scratched and peeling off. It was expected and I used anti rust paint to paint it before the install. Install was straightforward, a two person job. Holds up my 4 bikes carrier well.

I see lots of discussion about the heat shield. Well you need to remove at least two bolts of the shield to remove the rubber covers. (See picture) If you just drill the shield the rubber covers will be stuck between the hitch and body of the car which is bad idea when you think that a hitch is all about structural strenght. I also think that it is a good idea to trim that heat shiels so your hitch touches directly on the frame of the the car and that there is no heat shiel between.

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything absolutely as advertised except the paint job.

Received the hitch quickly. Installation was very easy with no need to jack up the car. Fit was perfect. The included installation hardware and instructions were unbelievably correct & easy to read & follow. I'd recommend this and would purchase one again.

The shipping box looked like it had really struggled to contain a 30 pound piece of metal bouncing around in it, which it had. Paint job on hitch looked like it had been bounced around in a container of other hitches & then slid across the concrete floor before I got it. Consequently I had to touch up a number of bare metal scrapes & scratches with some black Rustoleum prior to that easy installation I mentioned before. This wasn't much of a problem for me considering the significant price break coming from Amazon.

BTW, I viewed 2 YouTube videos on installation on a similar 2017 Subaru Forester vehicle and although those were very helpful (Thanks guys!), I do have a couple of comments:

First, on this car, remove the muffler completely. It's easy. Just remove the 2 nuts & bolts connecting it to the tail pipe & then wrestle a little with the 2 rubber muffler mounts. With that completely out of the way, the rest gets much easier.

Second, the included instructions and the videos I watched indicated the muffler heat shield would have to be tin snipped to modify it for hitch installation. Once I removed & inspected the heat shield I noticed two dimples punched at the two locations where the hitch mounting bolts would need to go. Instead of cutting the heat shield all up, I simply drilled out the 2 pressed dimples in the aluminum with a 1/2" bit, remounted the heat shield, & finished up installing the hitch. My point here is to check your heat shield for marks indicating where the holes need to go since in my case this Subaru is rated for towing and has a quick connector in it for the wiring harness and these 2 dimples facilitate installation of a hitch. It's much easier than cutting up the aluminum. Reinstalled the muffler & I'm good to go and it looks great from the back of the car.

5.0 out of 5 stars First time installing a reciever.....easy peasy with this Draw-Tite model!

Installed this single-handedly on a 2016 Forester with ZERO modification to the holes in the frame. While not the easiest of installs, I did do it alone and with no lift, ramps, or jacking up the rear end. So if I (who is not the most mechanically proficient guy in the world) can do it, anyone can. The only piece of advice I can add is if you have a big torque wrench, you'll want an extension so you have some room to turn the thing.

The hitch itself seems very well made and very robust. I'm sure it's overkill for my bike rack. LOL It looks nice and neat, tucked away under the bumper. If you're looking to save some money (UHaul said $380ish to put in a hitch, Subaru's quote was north of $750..though those both included wiring) this a pretty good path to choose.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware! No quality control!

Very disappointed with this hitch! I thought I was getting a great deal by doing this myself instead of paying 350+ dollars to get it done at U-Haul. First off I will say that the install was very straight forward and I had very little hastle getting the hitch on. However after it was all tightened down I took a step back to look at the hitch and I realised it's crooked! At first I thought it was just an illusion but after further inspecting the hitch I realized the square tube was not aligned properly when it was welded to the round tubes. You can see an obvious gap on the left side underneath the receiver hole and then it sits flush in the right side. That is some serious lack of quality control. I've contacted Draw-Tite customer service so I'll see what they say and what they will do for me. I will update when I've received some help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fit for 2015 Forester XT

Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2016

Excellent hitch for my '15 Forester XT. Some important installation notes that vary from the popular YouTube installation videos:

1. Remove the mufflers, the XT has dual exhaust. I tried removing the heat shields with just the mufflers hanging like the videos recommended (having removed the hangers) but there wasn't enough space, remove the two bolts per muffler, it will save tons of time in the long run, 2 14mm bolts.
2. DO NOT MODIFY THE LARGE HOLE. I think all of the installation videos say you need to modify the larger hole to get the bolts in either by drilling it larger or using two pry bars (which creates stress points, not good for towing). The bolds and holders that come with the hitch fit with no modifications needed.
3. The hitch goes on easily, bolts right on and sits below the bumper.
4. Modifying the heat shield is easy with a drill and a pair of pliers. Drill holes in the general vicinity, mount the shields and then use the pliers to just adjust the holes as necessary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy peasy - great product, simple installation, perfect fit

Wow - this was as easy as everyone says! I did it by myself in about an hour and a half - the hardest part was getting the exhaust of my Forester of the rubber hangers. I watched a You Tube video first and it was very straight forward. The bolt fishing wires provided made it so simple to pull the bolts and square holders up though the frame access hole and down through the bolt holes. I used a floor jack to lift the hitch and hold it in place while I fished the bolts down through the hitch and then put on the nuts and tightened. It was really a great change to have something go right and easy when so many times things are more difficult then they should be. The people who designed this hitch and put the instructions together have actually done this before! Makes me want to go find a friend with a Forester just so I can do it again :)
