Mushroom Drawing Step By Step

Creating a mushroom drawing is simple. This free and easy tutorial is a great way to get kids to draw nature. It's just about using the right technique. Follow this tutorial to learn how you can draw a mushroom step by step; there aren't many steps at all.

Starting Your Mushroom Drawing Tutorial

Getting Started

Before you start to draw mushrooms, make sure you have an idea of what you want them to look like. You can choose mushroom shapes from a book or do an online search for mushroom drawings and photographs. You will be surprised at the variety of shapes and sizes mushrooms come in.

Step 1: Drawing The Mushroom Cap

First, draw the caps of the mushrooms, which is also referred to as the head of the mushroom. This cap is the mushroom's most distinct and recognizable feature. Do an online search so you can see the variety of shapes the caps come in.

At the top of the stalk of the mushroom, draw a circle to represent the mushroom cap. Using this technique, you will end up with mushrooms that look more like an umbrella than a mushroom. Add some waves to the edge of the circle to create the shape. If you are looking at the mushroom from below, you need to add a second curve to create the overall structure and reveal the lines of the gilled area underneath.

The cap of mushrooms can take any form. But it will most likely have a small raised area in the center. This is where spores are made and released.

Step 2: Drawing The Stem

The next step of the tutorial is to draw a mushroom stalk or the stem of the mushroom. This is the narrow stalk that connects from the mushroom cap to the ground, and you can draw it with a simple line. Use your reference material to learn how to draw the stem of the mushrooms exactly as you want them. Some, but not all, appear a little like a tree trunk, wider at the bottom than the top. Most will also have a small frilled ring just below the mushroom's head, which is formed as the cap of the mushroom opens. It is details like this that will bring your drawing to life.

Step 3: Using Your Imagination & Creativity

The mushroom stalk/stem can be any length, but it usually grows to at least twice as high as its thickness. Check in the pictures from your search for examples. Some mushrooms have a much longer and thinner stem, while others are so short you hardly see them. Don't be frightened to experiment. The stalk is rarely straight, and the caps can sit at an angle or more horizontally on the top. Tutorials can get boring so let your imagination run wild for a while.

Step 4: Adding The Gills For Your Mushroom Drawing

When viewed from below or the side, you will see the gills underneath the mushroom cap. These are where the mushroom's spores grow and develop on the underside of the mushroom head. Most gills will be either ridged or split in two like a V-shape. You can draw them simply as lines.

Other mushrooms like Morels can have small circular holes where the spores are released. Search for different examples you can use to add more details to the image.

Take a look at the mushroom drawings and photographs you have collected to help you finish the details of the drawing you want.

Step 5: Framing The Mushroom In Your Drawing

For the next step of the tutorial, sketch some grass at the mushroom base to frame the drawing. To draw the grass, sketch some short, curved, irregular lines, connecting the points at the top to form the blades of the grass. Draw them at different angles as needed.

Make sure you draw the grass different lengths. If you draw longer blades of grass curving up the sides of the drawing, it frames the picture really well.

Step 6: Adding detail To Your Mushroom Drawing

You can leave your mushroom drawing simple without any shading or detail. Still, if you feel adventurous, you can add detail and emphasize the shape with some careful shading and add character with some well-drawn grass or flowers.

You could draw some spots, some stripes, or a mottled effect on the caps of the mushrooms to add realism. To create the spots, draw small circular shapes of various sizes.

Stripes will likely follow the shape of the cap running from the center outwards, so you can use them to emphasize the shape of the cap. A few simple lines can transform your drawing. Some mushrooms have a mottled effect, and you can use the reference material you have collected for ideas.

Step 7: Adding Shading To Your Mushroom Drawing

I start with some soft, light shading on the caps and stem, using a fairly rounded tip on a HB pencil. A sharp tip will allow you to draw narrow lines or cross-hatching, but a rounded tip can help when doing lighter, softer shading. Work lightly, to begin with; you can always add darker lines and shaded areas as you proceed.

Step 8: Adding The Direction Of Light

Remember to look at the direction of light when drawing in the shaded areas. After adding the initial shading, I will often use a sharper B or 2B pencil to add in the darker areas. If I want some really dark areas, I might also use some cross-hatching.

Step 9: Finishing The Sketch

After you are happy with your first mushroom drawing, draw a few more mushroom stems and caps to practice drawing the various shapes of other mushrooms and their caps. You don't have to draw them exactly; get comfortable with the composition and structure they have.

Then, draw more lines to add a bit more grass. This will add texture to the ground.

Step 10: Adding More Mushrooms

If you want a group of mushrooms in one picture, now is the time to draw in some more. You can separate them with a few blades of grass if needed. Again think about the direction of light and how each mushroom creates a shadow on the mushrooms around it. To finish off, if you are feeling adventurous, why not add a fairy or some flowers. Use our Flower Drawing Ideas blog for inspiration.

Step 11: Adding Colour To Finish The Mushroom Drawing

After you have finished, you can add color to your drawing if you want to. Why not print a few copies of your drawing so you can color them in as a collection. Use a fine liner pen to make the lines more solid.

You could use watercolour pencils if you have them for some amazing effects. Marker pen, ink, or acrylic paints can also give you fantastic results. Soon you will see that your simple mushroom drawing can become an amazing piece of art.
