Arthur Morgan's Journal Drawings
Red Dead Redemption 2 Community Makes Fun of Arthur's Duck Drawing
Red Dead Redemption 2 player takes to the game's subreddit and exposes less-than-impressive duck sketch in Arthur Morgan's journal.
Arthur Morgan is a man of many talents in Red Dead Redemption 2 but apparently drawing ducks isn't one of them. One of the more complex members of the Van der Linde gang, Arthur is often found sketching in his journal but players have found one drawing that stands out more than the others.
Beloved by Red Dead Redemption 2 fans, Arthur Morgan often reflects on his trials in the gang in his private journal. But on top of these writings, the journal is a place where he makes usually impressive sketches of locations, animals, and flora that he stumbles upon. Players can open up and read through this ever-changing journal throughout the arc of Red Dead Redemption 2 as this character's thoughts and feelings change.
However, players recently have focused on a rather simple drawing of a duck done by Arthur and used it to mock his skills. In the image are two other birds and a fox, each sketched in extreme detail. The lone standout is a simple outline of a duck that almost looks like it was drawn by a completely different person. Commenters on the post are quick to roast Arthur, writing all sorts of references to various memes and jokes. Fortunately for Arthur Morgan though this has turned out to actually be a feature in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Players note that drawings can evolve over time as Arthur interacts more and more with a specific creature. Through studying, hunting, and skinning a duck, this drawing should improve in the journal. They also point out that Arthur's early rendition of a duck looks quite like Red Dead Redemption's main character John Marston drew it. There skills in fighting might be similar but Arthur Morgan has a clear edge in illustration despite this duck.
The image, regardless of context, is recognizably funny for the stark contrast of the drawings but it brings up the topic of the journal. The journal entries in general add an important layer to Red Dead Redemption 2 and its optional nature is a bit of a shame. It leaves the hard work of the game's writers and designers off the radar for some players.
Then again, hidden secrets and extra content players have to dedicate time to uncover are especially rewarding. These journal entries add extra context and feeling to the storyline in Red Dead Redemption 2. It also adds depth to the character arc that Arthur Morgan goes through and is a great reward for players willing to put in the extra time. But, whether or not players pick up the journal, the game will forever remain one of the more successful titles of the last decade.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
